Reading Deribit Bitcoin Options: Put-Call Open Interest, Skew, and Implied vs. Realized Volatility

Options markets provide forward-looking information that spot and perpetual futures charts cannot capture: the price market participants are willing to pay for downside protection versus upside convexity, and the specific strike levels where dealer hedging flows cluster. Because Deribit accounts for the largest share of global crypto-native Bitcoin options open interest, its order book serves as a primary barometer for institutional derivatives positioning.

1. Put-Call Open Interest Ratio vs. Volume Ratio

The put-call open interest (OI) ratio divides total outstanding put contracts (in BTC terms) by total outstanding call contracts across all active expiries.

  • Low Put-Call OI Ratio (e.g., 0.40–0.55): Indicates that outstanding call contracts significantly outnumber puts. This structure is common in structurally bullish trends where institutions hold long-dated out-of-the-money (OTM) calls or overwrite existing spot holdings.
  • Rising Put-Call OI Ratio (>0.70): Reflects growing demand for downside puts relative to calls, often occurring during macro drawdowns or ahead of major Federal Reserve policy announcements.

Because open interest accumulates over months, pairing total OI split with near-dated option pricing helps distinguish passive long-term call overhangs from urgent short-term hedging.

2. Implied Volatility (IV) vs. Realized Volatility (RV) Spread

The volatility risk premium—measured as 30-day annualized Implied Volatility minus 30-day trailing Realized Volatility (IV - RV)—shows whether option buyers are paying a markup or a discount relative to actual historical price movement.

Volatility Spread (IV − RV)Option Pricing RegimeTypical Market Context
Positive (+5 to +15 vol pts)Options priced at a premium to recent movementEvent risk priced in (CPI, FOMC, ETF rulings) or demand for tail hedging
Near Zero (−3 to +3 vol pts)Implied volatility aligned with realized paceBalanced two-way flow without acute event markup
Negative (< −5 vol pts)Implied volatility below trailing realized swingsPost-liquidation exhaustion or systematic call overwriting compressing IV

3. Near-Dated Put-Call Volatility Skew

Even when headline implied volatility appears calm, the difference in implied volatility between out-of-the-money puts and out-of-the-money calls (skew) reveals directional anxiety. When 7-day or 30-day puts trade several volatility points above equivalent calls, institutional desks are actively bidding up crash protection. Conversely, when calls trade at a volatility premium over puts, traders are paying up for upside breakout exposure.

4. Major Expiry Concentration and Strike Walls

Bitcoin options open interest typically clusters around monthly and quarterly expiries (the last Friday of the month at 08:00 UTC). Tracking the largest open expiry and the top three strike prices by open interest helps identify zones where market-maker delta hedging can dampen or amplify intraday spot moves as expiration approaches.
